In June of 1920, a select few University of Maine women organized as Beta Gamma and held meetings at a local house. With the help of individuals from the Orono community and Dr. Daley - The University of Maine President, they considered a half a dozen nationals to petition for a charter. After diliberation it was decided that their preference was Chi Omega.
At the time, Beta Gamma's colors were brown and orange, thier flower was the yellow chrysanthemum, and their mascot the apple.
On Friday, December 2nd, 1921, Mary Love Collins with the help of 13 actives from the Beta chapter at Colby College installed Beta Gamma as the Xi Beta Chapter of Chi Omega. There were 22 charter members.
Since the formation of our chapter, UMaine Chi Omega has provided its members with the unique opportunity to foster leadership, scholarship, selfless service, and lifelong friendship, all in one place. We look forward to continuing our tradition “to be womanly always and discouraged never."
